Life's too short to say no to cake. - Author unknown

tiny + brave style
Cake Smash sessions are all about giving your little person free rein to do as they please with their very own birthday cake! Posing is very limited, giving your little one much more opportunity to just be themselves. There is so much joy to be had for them with a cake and for us to watch their gorgeous and hilarious reactions to all that icing and cake, the wonder of it being all for them!

timing + duration
These sessions can be held anywhere around your child's first birthday. Often we will photograph them a little ahead of your little one's birthday so the finished images can play a part in the other first birthday celebrations you have planned, some families like to hold the session on or as close to their child's birthday as possible and others like to wait to do something within the month after their birthday. This is entirely up to you and what works best for you and your family and something we can discuss when scheduling a date for you.

Cake Smash sessions typically run for anywhere between 30-90 minutes. This timeframe will vary with each child as it all depends on how much they like or dislike the delicious cake baked especially for them. But I never watch the clock, in fact I don't even wear a watch, if everyone is enjoying themselves and I am seeing some beautiful moments, I tend to just keep going.

styling
The styling for your cake smash session is very minimalistic, it is important to me that your sweet adorable one year old shines through as the true star of your finished images and doesn't get too swept up and lost amongst too many props. As you will see from the images on display, I will always include something gorgeous to really make the images pop.

All styling is included in your Session Fee which is payable at the time of booking. You are welcome to bring along your own things if you wish also.

Outdoor locations use the natural elements to style your images and if you choose a fruit salad smash instead of a cake, the picnic style will be the setting for your session

cake + fruit salad
Your cake or fruit salad are included in your Session Fee.

Cakes are professionally baked with love by Janine and Eat Cake Be Happy.

Fruit salad sessions are recommended to be held in the summer months to take advantage of the gorgeous colours that summer fruits have to offer. Fruit is hand selected on the day of your session by me with aesthetics being my main focus for choosing each piece of fruit to fill the picnic basket. Any fruit left untouched at the end of the session is yours to keep.

All dietary requirements will be taken into account during the baking and fruit selection process to ensure it is safe for your child.

location
Cake Smash photography sessions can be held in the Tiny and Brave studio in Briar Hill, or at an outdoor location, usually somewhere with little to know public foot traffic so as not to have too many distractions away from the cake.

In studio sessions are scheduled for mid morning to ensure we are able to we work with the best natural light of the day

Outdoor sessions are held in the mid-late afternoon, working around the last glorious light of the day. I am located in the Northern Suburbs of Melbourne and have some absolutely gorgeous favourite places in my area, but am open to most locations throughout Melbourne and surrounds too. If you have any favourite places your family loves to visit, that’s a great place to start! Or if nothing springs to mind, let me take you on an adventure to make this milestone a memorable one!

clothing
Again, keeping the simplistic style for your images, working with fairly plain clothing is ideal. Light neutral colours always work really well.

Deciding on a colour scheme for the entire session is the best place to start and then we work from there to find the best outfit for your little one to wear. Once we have the outfit sorted, I then liaise with my cake maker to ensure the colours of the cake don't clash with the chosen outfit.

It is best to try to avoid large prints and logos as these can be quiet distracting in your photographs.

I have a small selection of ruffle pants/nappy covers available in the studio which are available for your session and If I have lost you here, let's chat further about wardrobe options prior to your session.

When you invest in me as your photographer, I truly value this opportunity and aim to provide an enjoyable experience, images that reflect my creativity and finished products that protect and display your stunning portraits for many years to come.
